Continuation of Avatar the Last Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender release date updates: Will there be a new season? When is it coming out?

With the re-emergence ofAvatar: The Last Airbender's popularity in recent years, old fans of the show were reminded of the magic that is the animated series while new fans got to experience the show's beauty for the first time.

One thing both old and new fans can agree on is that the Nickelodeon series needs to come back and show us the lives of Aang, Katara, and Sokka immediately after usurping Fire Lord Ozai. Fans may not have to wait too long for this, asAvatar: The Last Airbendercould be making its long-awaited return sooner than we think.

Here's everything we know about the potential comeback.

How many seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender are there?

As of right now, there are currently only three seasons of the animated series, with each season having about 20 episodes except for the third season which has an extra bonus episode.

Every season of the show is currently available to watch on Netflix.

Is there going to be a season 4 of Avatar: The Last Airbender?

There likely won't be an Avatar: The Last Airbender season 4, however, the story will continue in some way.

According to The Verge, the creators of the show, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, have partnered up with Nickelodeon to create Avatar Studios, an animation studio that will continue theAvatar franchise with additional series and possible films.

This comes as great news for fans of the show as DiMartino and Konietzko have struggled in the past with having authority over their creation's continuance.

In 2014,The Legend of Korra, which was a continuation of theAvatarseries, was unfortunately pulled by Nickelodeon due to various reasons including critics of the show stating the series was way too explicit for a children's network.

The same year, DiMartino talked about the show's cancellation and why there was so much pushback from Nickelodeon in 2014. In an interview with Gizmodo, DiMartino stated:

It's no secret that Avatar, especially Korra, is not typical Nickelodeon fare. And so they've had kind of a hard time fitting it into their programming. […] So, we're moving over to digital. It's actually a plan that was in place earlier and it changed course and then went back in a bit of a messy way. But thanks for sticking with us.

Switching over to digital streamers like Netflix seems to have been a great call as the show grew in popularity in a way that exceeded everyone's expectations, likely including Nickelodeon.

Now that the creators have got their own animation studio, more content from Avatar: The Last Airbender doesn't seem like a pipedream. But as for season 4, we're not too sure. Back in 2020, Konietzko told Polygon that there wouldn't be another season, stating:

There was never going to be a season 4, not from us and not from Nickelodeon. Mike and I planned [The Last Airbender] to be a three-season arc as far back as our initial pitch in 2002, and in 2008 we finished the story we set out to tell.

Is the Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action show still happening?

Prior to the announcement of Avatar Studios, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko were set to serve as executive producers and showrunners on a live-action Avatar show for Netflix. Unfortunately, as reported by What's On Netflix, the two left the series over creative differences, with DiMartino posting an open letter about their decision which noted that "things did not go as we had hoped."

The Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action show is still supposedly in the works, however we do not have any updates on when we can expect it.

Trust us, we'll be the first to let you know about any new updates aboutAvatar: The Last Airbenderas we want to know what married Aang and Katara look like, too. (Kataang for life!)
